Lesson Plan for Primary 5 - Composition - Descriptive Writing

Title: Descriptive Writing Grade Level: Primary 5 Duration: 1 Hour Objective: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: 1. Understand the concept and importance of descriptive writing. 2. Identify and use sensory details in their writing. 3. Write a short descriptive paragraph about a familiar place or object. Materials: - Whiteboard and markers - Printed copies of a descriptive writing sample - Pictures of various scenes/objects - Writing paper and pencils - Sensory detail chart (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch) Introduction (10 minutes): 1. Begin with a brief discussion about descriptive writing. Explain that descriptive writing aims to paint pictures with words, making the reader feel as though they can see, hear, and feel what the writer is describing. 2. Ask students to describe their favorite food. Write a few examples on the board to illustrate how sensory details make descriptions more vivid and interesting. Guided Practice (15 minutes): 1. Distribute copies of a well-written descriptive paragraph. Read the paragraph aloud with the class. 2. Highlight the sensory details in the paragraph. Discuss the use of adjectives and adverbs that enhance the descriptions. 3. Create a sensory detail chart on the board (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch). Ask students to help fill in examples from the sample paragraph. Activity (20 minutes): 1. Show students pictures of various scenes (e.g., a park, the beach, a busy market, a cozy room). Allow students to choose one picture to describe. 2. Distribute writing paper and pencils. Instruct students to write a descriptive paragraph about their chosen picture, focusing on using sensory details. 3. Encourage students to use the sensory detail chart to brainstorm before they start writing. Remind them to think about what they see, hear, smell, taste, and feel in the picture. Peer Review (10 minutes): 1. After students have written their paragraphs, have them pair up with a classmate. 2. Each student reads their paragraph to their partner. Partners should listen carefully and then share one thing they liked about the description and one suggestion for improvement. 3. If time permits, students can revise their paragraphs based on the feedback received. Conclusion (5 minutes): 1. Ask a few students to volunteer to read their revised paragraphs aloud to the class. 2. Provide positive reinforcement and constructive feedback. 3. Conclude by emphasizing the importance of using sensory details to make writing more vivid and engaging. Assessment: - Observe students during the discussion and guided practice to assess their understanding of sensory details. - Review the descriptive paragraphs to evaluate the students' ability to incorporate sensory details in their writing. Homework: Ask students to choose another object or place at home and write a descriptive paragraph using the sensory details they've learned in class. Encourage them to share their homework with their family members to practice descriptive writing with an audience.
